31 Jul 2008 will be a dark day in the Radio history of Singapore.
From a single radio station in 1936 to the colourful dialect broadcasts on cable radio in the 1970s. From a monopoly to a vibrant and competitive radio industry. From prim and proper announcers who read from vetted scripts to radio personalities who talk freely behind the microphones. From a domestic market to reaching millions across Asia.
For the last 14 years, Radio Singapore International has been “dedicated to quality broadcasting to external audiences and Singaporeans abroad. It seeks to be a radio of reference for the region, providing a service which is a reliable, accurate and objective source of news and views on international, regional and domestic events.”
It was announced just two months ago that RSI will cease operations in August. Imagine being told to leave your job within eight weeks and to destroy what you have painstakingly built up over the last decade. Sigh.
To my colleagues and friends in RSI, I wish you the very best. It has been my privilege to have produced the Global Chinese Music Chart Show in 2006/07 and be part of the glorious history of RSI. Take care.
