slurp*burp : Malay food @ Tanjong Pagar Railway Station
9 November 2010 Tuesday | slurp*burp

Nine months to go before the railway station finally moves out of Tanjong Pagar. The authorities have said that the building would be preserved, but I highly doubt that keeping the hawkers- who mostly speak only Bahasa Melayu- would be part of the plan.

We were rowdy (and irritating) teenagers taking a train for the first time in our lives back in 1997, so we obviously missed out on many details before we headed to Taman Negara.

HG, who had been there several times, still couldn’t contain her excitement at the Ramly stall and took this photo of a half-headed man. I don’t like chili sauce in my burgers, but I took two bites anyway. The rest of the table was full of very affordable and absolutely delicious Malay fare. The place isn’t spick-and-span and there isn’t a no-smoking rule on that piece of Malaysian soil. But it was a very interesting experience, especially when the train pulled in.

slurp*burp: Pineapple Tarts @ Melaka
17 October 2010 Sunday | slurp*burp

It’s been almost a month since we returned from Melaka, and I haven’t stopped thinking about the pineapple tarts we had. The crust was perfectly done- not too flaky, not too buttery. And the pineapple mix, which requires so much preparation was of optimal sweetness- not too bland and not too overpowering. Oh man!

In preparation for Singapore Hit Awards, I promised everyone around me that I’ll cut my sugar intake (read: Coke) and try not to look bloated on stage. And I said that I would make a day trip to Melaka immediately after SHA just to buy these.

My mum was in Malaysia for work this week. She came back with a box of pineapple tarts for me.

Lovely.

SHA? What SHA?!

Hahahahha.

slurp*burp: Wagyu Beef Burger @ The Garden Slug
31 August 2010 Tuesday | slurp*burp

slurp*burp is a new column on cruzteng.com, where I’ll be uploading pics of things I ate and liked. The frequency will very much depend on how often I dine out.

I’m also considering doing thrash*this*trash to feature all the yucky food I had. We’ll see.

A couple of reasons… I now have a better camera on my phone, which makes it a lot easier to capture images of my meals. And I’ve realised how powerful food blogs are, after the Food Blogger with many friends in the correct places vs Restaurant with embarrassingly bad PR skills drama.

However, I’m not positioning myself to be an actual food blogger, so I won’t be doing lengthy reviews on the taste, price, ambience, etc. And I certainly won’t be answering your questions on exact location and opening hours. I’m Cruz Teng, not your online helpdesk. There’s Google. And there’re the real food blogs. :)

The Garden Slug is a cosy place at Telok Kurau. The pasta and pizza we had was mediocre, but the wagyu beef burger was a real winner. And the chicken wings were good too.

If you happen to drop by, would you please consider tipping the friendly service staff an extra dollar? We only realized that they didn’t include a service charge after we left the place. 10 or 20 of you should be enough to make up for that. Hahaha.
