Radio 75
27 July 2011 Wednesday | Pass Me the Mic

We celebrated 75 glorious years of Radio at a gala dinner at Capella last night. I wasn’t part of the organising committee, and neither did I perform. I merely dressed accordingly, and showed up to mingle with 300 invited guests.

I think my colleagues did a brilliant job in the preparation and execution. From a quick history lesson showcasing Radio milestones and interviewing former Heads of Radio, to my managing director Florence Lian singing “Yesterday Once More”, to the veterans tribute and the video in memorial of colleagues who have passed on… With so many radio legends gathered together, and numerous former colleagues returning with their heartiest congratulations, it was a fantastic night by all standards. And I somehow managed to drink more than I usually do.

I could totally relate when Jean Danker recounted the day she discovered the magic of Radio. “How did this little black box contain so much music? And those DJs?! How did they talk like that? “

“I want to be a radio presenter when I grow up!”

We did. WOOHOO!

Hossan Leong and Vernetta Lopez closed the night with “Turn It On”- a song commissioned for Radio’s 75th anniversary. Then all the DJs were asked to go onto the stage- something that we weren’t prepared for. As we hastily wiped our mouths, we glanced around cautiously. No one wanted to be the first to rush up, and neither did anyone attempted to be the last. Hahahha. To Bobby Tonelli, I said, “Gee, you’re too good looking. I don’t want to stand beside you.” And to Shan Wee, I exclaimed, “You’re too tall. I don’t want to stand beside you either.” It was a tragic finale as I ended up sandwiched between these two guys right in the middle of the stage. The most appropriate expression would be, FML! Hahaha.

I’d always turn up my nose when people suggested that “Video Killed the Radio Star.” They came, they tried, and we survived. But we’re not taking things for granted, of course. We radio folks know that we’re facing keen competition ahead, and we’re determined to maintain a competitive edge. Thanks for the 75-year journey, and WOOHOO! to many more ahead. As my CEO Shaun Seow said, “RADIO ROCKS!

Work hard, play harder.
24 July 2011 Sunday | -

I said at the end of last year, that my role model for the next twelve months would be Andy Lau, and that I would work as hard as him. Slog till I break my back, chiong, chiong, chiong and not utter a single complaint. But you know the reality of new year resolutions is that they don’t work out most of the time.

I’m not slacking, definitely. But I’m taking it easy. I’d declined quite a number of jobs, some of which I had to use all my will and might. From “I would prefer not to do it. Thanks.”, “Perhaps someone else is more suitable for this. Thanks.” to “No, I will not do this, even if you kill me.”

So I’ve been getting used to really relaxing weekends.

An impromptu dinner date on Friday evening exploded into a four-hour session. I haven’t met up with S. for a while now, and she had so much to update. We used to trade taxi driver stories back then, and we thought we would co-author such a book. She told me about her operation (common womanly stuff, but eewwwww), her job, and subsequently grumbled about the usual grievances about life.

We celebrated G.‘s birthday on Saturday. Some of them wondered aloud why I didn’t attend Fish Leong’s concert, “I wanted to, okay! But it’s G’s birthday! I will be disowned if I dared venture near the Stadium!”

There was another birthday celebration the next day. The star wasn’t my friend; it was her five-year-old daughter. Oh man, I’m actually attending parties for my friends’ offspring. The adults tried to persuade the kids to greet me, but they were too shy to do so. “It’s ok, really. Don’t force them to call me Uncle, and don’t force me to hear them calling me Uncle. This is tragic. Let’s eat, ok?”

Note to all: It’s ok for your kids not to greet me. I wouldn’t imagine that they’re ill-mannered. I’m fine. Really. Don’t ask them to call me Uncle. And worse, don’t ask them to call me Gor Gor. They will be so confused! Muahahahaha.

X., whom I haven’t met for years, proudly showed off her wedding ring. “Sorry that I didn’t inform anyone… I’m married!” Well, this surprise announcement pales in comparison to what SJ. did last year. “What do you mean you’re inviting me to your baby shower? You didn’t even tell me you were pregnant!”

I had a great time catching up with these longtime friends. If only we work on Saturdays and Sundays, and rest from Mondays to Fridays.

slurp*burp: Breakfast Down Under @ The House of Robert Timms
24 July 2011 Sunday | slurp*burp

I’m on a perpetual hunt for yummy breakfast outside breakfast hours. My eyes light up at “All Day Breakfast” signage.

The House of Robert Timms, which has replaced the bistro at Borders, offers a very satisfying meal. And the service was pretty good!
