As I did a verbal countdown over the weekend, I realised that a few others were equally excited.
JN: Ho Seh! You can take part in Hey Gorgeous/校花校草追趕跑!
HG: Don’t give him false hopes! Sure got age limit one!
Phui. Anyway, part time students aren’t eligible lah.

Contrary to what my friends think, I wasn’t trying to be fashionably late. Neither was I attempting to make a grand entrance. I was 15 minutes behind schedule for the first lesson on Monday evening because of the incredible traffic jam outside the school.
As I was stuck in what seemed like a 100 meter queue, I was thinking, “This is it! First lesson! But do I really want to do this?!” Hahaha!
I felt totally liberated after handing in my final paper in May 1999. I wasn’t concerned at all if any distinctions were in store. I merely wanted to get a diploma, and I was absolutely confident I didn’t require any supplementary papers to achieve that goal. (If that can even be considered a goal…) I had enough, I thought. No more mugging, no more examinations, and no more hour-long bus rides to Ngee Ann Polytechnic.
Nearly a decade later, I found myself once again on Platform 9-3/4. Along the way, a handful of people asked why I had to make life difficult for myself by juggling work and studies. Several others doubted if the course I chose was really relevant.
Well… For the umpteenth (and final) time, a degree isn’t a career advancement or money making tool. Not now, anyway. My academic qualifications won’t get me a fatter pay cheque in this industry. (An endorsement deal or two will. Hah!) I’m just going back to school to keep myself occupied, and to learn something along the way.
It was really surreal to sit down in a classroom once again. Instead of taking down (or copying) lecture notes to ‘score for exams‘, I was scribbling interesting pointers and highlighting follow up topics for my own reading pleasure.
Just as I had plenty of fun freelancing in 933 during my school days, I assume I’ll enjoy the next three years as Cruz Teng, the part time undergrad. Woohoo!
P/S: Please don’t ask where or what I’m studying.

Its great fun to study when u dun have to worry about your grades not getting u anywhere afterwards. It must be fun & exciting to be back in school/class after so many years.
