Zhang Yining basks in the limelight

Unfortunately for us, my prediction came true.

Team Singapore’s Li Jiawei lost both the semis and the bronze medal match after putting up two hard fights. Awwww…

At the subsequent finals, the clash of the titans made everyone sit up. Zhang Yining and Wang Nan were fighting for their second singles gold medal after winning in Athens 2004 and Sydney 2000 respectively. Zhang Yining remained mostly expressionless while Wang Nan, (who should be competing in the Olympics for the last time) showed a variety of expressions, including grinning briefly but sweetly when she scored, sticking out her tongue when she lost a point, and smiled knowingly when Zhang Yining overtook her with a wide margin in the final set. Every inch the world champion she was, Wang Nan displayed excellent sportsmanship. She remains the most bemedalled table tennis player in the Olympics with four golds and a silver.

Zhang Yining displayed a smile at the end of the game, but reverted to the “you owe me a million bucks” frown seconds later. This girl needs to relax lah. She has retained her Olympics title and all three spots on the podium were claimed by the China team for the first time since Seoul 1988.

Zhang Yining should take a good break and perhaps watch some Stephen Chow stuff before returning to her daily pick pock pick pock regime. Yes, Zhang Yining has to be wary of a girl named Feng Tianwei when she takes to stage in London 2012.
