3SG Teng is very important.

*This post is for the guys.

Numerous questions when I received an SAF100 to attend a briefing next month. Briefings are not good. It means you have stuff to do, that’s why people have to brief you. And if the briefing cannot be conducted over the phone, the things you have to do can’t be simple.

Shortly after, I received a letter to congratulate (?) me on becoming a AIC, where I’m supposed to have my 3 DICs and other (fortunate) non ICs contactable before and during mob.

Glossary:

Mob = Mobilisation. MINDEF presses one button and have everyone report back to camp- usually Saturday afternoons, and be ready to fight a war. Or do other important things, like looking for missing terrorists.

AIC = Area ICs. The entire island is divided into numerous sectors. Within each sector, there’s an AIC and several DICs.

DIC = Detachment (or Detail?) ICs.

Essentially, AICs and DICs are asked to make sure each and every camo loving soldier living in that area is contactable. In the event some idiot someone doesn’t turn up when the button is pressed, AICs and DICs are responsible for finding them back. (Ok, technically we do house visits, and if we still can’t find them, the full time military police are involved. We all have day jobs, you know).

Which brings to the point. How can any 20-40 man in Singapore get by without a mobile line, and how it is possible to ignore MINDEF’s reminders to have their contact details updated. They call you, they email you, they sms you ALL AT THE FRIGGIN’ SAME TIME, with the aim to have everyone contactable so that everyone appears promptly when there’re emergencies. Do I even have to quote examples of such scenarios? Let’s not give that limping man too much credit and exposure.

I’m relieved to see my list of people have all responded to previous call ups. Phew.
