I was up till 2am on Friday to script Dark Alley 2.
Although there was sufficient energy to shout “It’s Friday” on air five hours later, Cruz Teng’s operational manual has this line in bold and font size 72:
Lack of sleep = Bad mood.
If you do not already know, 933 (and almost every FM radio station in Singapore) uses the Master Control to deliver all our audio on air. The most critical component is the “Sequencer”. It’s designed in such a way that even if other applications are closed, the “Sequencer” toils on its own to prevent silence on the airwaves. It almost never fails.
If the IT guys were to be consulted, they will attribute Friday’s breakdown to “Cruz Teng’s speed.”
Ya lah, I was in a hurry to complete my stuff. I was frantically doing some recording and editing while the system was churning the nine songs for 醉心歌曲九连环. I had been told more than once not to run that many programmes at one go, and to slow down on my clicking in order not to overload the system.
Fine. I caused it to crash. I had to resolve the problem by manually playing CDs while I rebooted the system. By the time Master Control was up and running, I had to hand over the console to Jiahui as the 九连环 had ended.
I headed to another terminal to continue my editing, and guess what… It CRASHED too!
Wah biang. You say I angry or not.
… Though shouting in Hokkien (or any language, for that matter) at a lifeless computer screen wouldn’t help in any way.
Shortly after, I headed to Reception. I had asked Universal Music for a KELLY TEE because I was hosting her press conference on Saturday.
My very kind and helpful colleague picked it up for me. And forgot to inform me.
What was meant to be a Office-> Reception -> Carpark -> Home itinerary turned into:
Office (@ Level 3) -> Reception (150m away) -> Office (@ Level 3; to take a key) -> Pigeon Hole (@ Basement; to collect the tee) -> Office (@ Level 3; to return the key) -> Carpark-> Home.
Wah biang.
I couldn’t scream at my colleague for he was thoughtful enough to collect my stuff. Another colleague offered to walk down to the basement, but I couldn’t bring myself to ask a lady 30 years my senior to run such an errand for me.
Still… You try limping that painful distance and you tell me you happy or not.

After driving home for a bath and change of underwear at 4pm, (strictly for hygiene purposes, not for better luck). we were at Don’s for three rounds of mahjong.
True to expectations, I lost almost $100 by the end of two rounds. And by the third game, I couldn’t take it anymore. I anyhowly 吃-ed, 碰-ed, 扛-ed my way to a number of miserable wins. The logic was that even though it was very sia suay for me (Cruz Teng ley!) to keep winning 1台、2台, it would prevent the other three players from getting more chips from me. Throw in an accidental 6台自摸, my losses were reduced to $13. And because of a generous discount from Don- the sole winner of the night, I only had to pay $10.
I might be suay, but I do have some skills… Or was it because of the underwear?
I literally laughed out loud when I saw the graffiti at the lift lobby later that night.
A publicity stunt for the movie?

A bit of IT knowledge that I juz remembered, the “Sequencer†that 933 is using think is using a lot of memory and RAM running behind the scene where nobody knows. Juz like a normal PC, if you are running too many programs at one shot, some programs will hang. So same for that, because it is ‘producing’ a ‘product’, so it will caused it to crash. So remember, even if you are rushing, try very hard not to run tooo many programs. It will save u problem. Computer is juz a machine anyway, it’s not like human can multitasking
