In case you’re as slow as me, and considering whether to get these discs, I present my very unprofessional reviews for four movies I watched on the way to and fro Tokyo.
Wilbur the Pig is earmarked as the centrepiece on the Christmas dinner table. Because he is such a nice and friendly little pig, Charlotte the Spider puts her web spinning skills to good use by spinning words such as “Some Pig” on her web. Wilbur becomes famous and escapes the fate of becoming ham, bacon and/ or bak kwa.
Ok, the ang mohs probably don’t have bak kwa. But you get the point.
Why you should get the VCD/ DVD:
It’s a classic, people! Movies with talking insects and animals (especially those with sophisticated names like Charlotte the Spider and Templeton the Rat) mostly contain heartwarming themes and reminds us to be kind to people around us. Charlotte made a promise, and kept to it.
Mumble (I kept thinking it was Mambo- as in Mambo Jambo, when I watched the show), son of Memphis and Norma Jean, is just about the only emperor penguin which cannot sing and therefore ostracised by the Lee Homs and Yanzis of the penguin colony. In any case, God is fair- for Mumble is really good at dancing. This talent comes in really handy when the penguins nearly starve to death.
Why you should get the VCD/ DVD:
Though I think it has a rather crappy conclusion, movies with talking insects and animals (especially those with sophisticated names like Memphis the male Emperor Penguin and Norma Jean the female Emperor Penguin) mostly contain heartwarming themes. In a way, Happy Feet highlights the fate and circumstances of minorities, and despite not being welcome in the mainstream gang, have a right to stay and part to play in the community.
I think the filmmakers also wanna put across the message of saving the environment lah. Please note.
Ok, no animals here. It’s a Broadway musical adapted for the big screen.
Three Afro American ladies aspiring to be singers, grit through their teeth by singing back up. When their big break comes around, their relationship is put to the test as the original lead singer Effie (played by the Oscar winning Jennifer Hudson) is replaced by Deena (Beyonce Knowles). Apart from the all too familiar power struggles, Deena and Effie deal with issues in love, friendship, trust, betrayal and discrimination- racial and otherwise.
Why you should get the VCD/ DVD:
It makes you wanna believe in and pursue your dreams, no matter how difficult that may be. And you’ve gotta do it in the most honest way possible cos bad guys usually come to a tragic end, whether in real and reel life.
Oh, it has an awesome soundtrack too.
And it makes me wanna watch Moulin Rouge and Chicago again.
The 21st film in the series features James Bond as a new Double Zero agent. Daniel Craig plays poker, breaks into his boss’s house, steals her password and hacks into MI6′s system. He also foils a terrorist attack at the airport. And there’s this girl he beds. I’m not sure if he went to bed with the second babe cos the plane (mine) landed at Narita.
Why you should get the VCD/ DVD:
Only if you really really have that compulsive need to complete your 007 disc collection.
If you have too much cash to spare, why don’t you get me the Dreamgirls OST instead?
