It was a bad idea to spend two stressful hours watching Babel. I’m a strong advocate of watching silly movies with hilarious plots or slapstick humour on weekends.
I squirmed in my seat in the huge GV Max as I saw a deglamourised Brad Pitt stressing over his wife who was in a very stressful condition. The family who did something to Brad Pitt’s wife in the heart of the Moroccan desert was stressed too. The lady taking care of their kids somehow managed to get herself into a state of distress over at the US/Mexican borders. And let’s not forget the deaf mute girl in Tokyo stressing over love and acceptance. Sibei stressful lah, to watch this movie on a weekend.
Now, I’m not saying that this movie sucks. I just said it made me very stressed. Especially when my bladder was full.
After a much needed visit to the loo, I was sending SOS messages over dinner.
“WRU? 3 lack 1.”
There were the 心有逾而力不足 people, and the 袖手旁觀隔岸觀火 ones.
While we were contemplating to call it a night after futile attempts to organise mahjong, we heard this girl at VivoCity shouting out loud to her friends in Hokkien, “Wah lao! Gao Diam Nia Leh”!”
Translation: Wah Lao! 9 o’clock only leh!
Yes, no one should be on their way home at 9pm. Not when I slept for more than 12 hours the previous night. Hahaha.
Surprisingly, I found a parking lot in no time. There were minimal jams along New Bridge Road but it was generally acceptable and bearable, considering that we are only two weekends away from the Big Day. And the weather was great! I hardly perspired after an hour in the crowd.
(With the Year of the Pig round the corner, I think I should remind you guys that humans perspire. Pigs sweat.)
It’s been a couple of years. The turnout was rather good, though the babel wasn’t enough to overwhelm me. I’ve been trained well at night markets in Hong Kong and Taiwan I suppose. Speaking of which, I’m thankful no one decided to sell smelly tofu at Chinatown.
Like most, we were simply browsing and not spending (enough). Our rather insignificant contributions was to this trio of guys selling coconuts for $1 each. And we paid $2 (!!!) for choc coated grapes at this stall where they had a huge chocolate fondue. $2 is VERY overpriced, I think.
The stall holders were mostly in a joyous mood. A man was actually throwing packets of Taiwanese muah chee at the crowd. And two stalls down the road, this girl was asking questions and trying to give away packets of muah chee.
By the way, DJs from all three MediaCorp Chinese Stations- 933, 958 and 972- will be at the Countdown Show at Chinatown on CNY eve. Right after my magic tricks (emphasis is on the second word- tricks) , I’ve been tasked to learn something and will be performing at the show. It’s a lot more painful and way much challenging for Clumsy Cruz… And fortunately, I’m not doing the finale act this time.
