Was exchanging heated emails with someone the last couple of days. She wanted me to do something, and I didn’t want to do it. Simply cos I’ve done the thing before, and I think I did a pretty good job. So I was super unwilling to re-do it.
Subsequently I realised it wasn’t her decision to make me do the thing, but I retorted in an angry mail that I will “suck thumb and do it since I’m ‘required’ to do so”. And then she came up with an angry reply– Duno say what lah. I see liao, very angry and closed my inbox.
Conclusion was we were both very worked up and the other ten people on the CC list didn’t know how to react.
Thurday evening, they told me something happened to her. Cruz’s SMS: “How’s your face? What happened?” Her SMS: “Whoa everyone know liao ah? It’s a viral infection that affects the nervous system of the cheek. So can’t control movement of my cheeks. Doc ask me go A&E lo” Cruz’s SMS: “Oh… I thought you got a stroke after reading my emails.” Her SMS: “Haha ya I thought so too! Morale of the story: You can argue your way around, you can voice your displeasures out loud for the whole world to hear. But at the end of the day, when something happens, you realise nothing’s more important than getting assured that your friend is ok. I think this is an excellent case of communication. You see, we made full use of our Outlooks and avoided a face-to-face confrontation. Our points were delivered fully- that I was plain DL and she was DL too. Then something happens, we communicate via SMS, avoiding another face-to-face interaction, in case the anger built up from the emails hadn’t disappear. One smiley and okie, the storm’s over. I think it’s better than cursing and swearing behind each other’s backs. Right. Get well soon, Ah Lum! And oh yes, I still don’t feel like doing the thing you asked me to do.. :/
