Lord Vader and Lord Voldemort

Woo.. Freaking tired after finishing Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince in less than 24 hours.

I can’t help but feel that there are some uncanny similarities between He Who Must Not Be Named aka Lord Voldemort aka Tom Riddle & Dark Lord of the Sith aka Darth Vader aka Anakin Skywalker.

[SPOILER ALERT: DO not proceed if you have not- and intend to- read Harry Potter VI. ]

And now…

Presenting the similarities between Lord Voldemort and Lord Vader

1. Their (final) names begin with V!

Duh.

2. They had very unhappy childhoods.

Tom Riddle’s mum dumped him at an orphanage. There, people were either petrified of him or thought he was a nutcase.

Anakin Skywalker was a child slave, and subsequently couldn’t save his mum from death.

Tom Riddle killed his father, while Anakin Skywalker had no idea who his father was. –okie it’s quite different; the point is they had no fatherly love.

3. They were over-excelling kids

Tom Riddle’s peers were mysteriously killed once they offended him. And he did a brilliant job. Everyone knew he was the murderer but could not provide sufficient evidence. When he went on to Hogwarts, he became a top student.

Anakin Skywalker built C3PO at the age of nine, and became the only human known capable of handling the extreme speeds of Podracing. As a Jedi Padawan, he saved Obi Wan Kenobi, his Jedi Master, more than once.

4. They were talent spotted at a young age.

Professor Dumbledore travelled all the way to the orphanage and offered Tom Riddle a place in Hogwarts; while Qui Gon Jinn met Anakin Skywalker and brought him back to the Jedi Temple. Both Riddle and Skywalker were more than happy to be trained as a Wizard and Jedi respectively.

In both cases, neither Dumbledore, nor Qui Gon Jinn ever thought they would one day turn evil.

5. They were seduced to the dark side, mainly with the idea of combating mortality

Tom Riddle was infatuated with idea of immortality and thus proceeded with experimenting with Hoxcruxes.

Anakin Skywalker wanted to prevent his dear Padme from death at childbirth, thus betrayed the Jedi and turned to the Sith.

5. They killed their former mentors.

Lord Voldemort sent a young Ah Beng to finish off Dumbledore, while Vader destroyed Obi Wan Kenobi with his light saber.

6. They had no friends.

Lord Voldemort didn’t report to anyone except himself. He had no friends, no allies. Only pawns which he manipulated to achieve his goals

Lord Vader reported to the Emperor, whom he addressed as “Master”- so that’s not a friend right? The rest of the Empire either think he’s trying to be funny, talking about the Force all the time, or are wary of his ability to kill someone via videoconferencing.

7. Their physical being was incomplete.

As at HP VI, Lord Voldemort was still trying to regain a tangible existence. (Can someone verify this part? He hasn’t done that yet right?)

Lord Vader cannot survive out of his sleek outfit or the ultra cool chamber in his bedroom. The only time his mask was off in public, was when he wanted to see his son before his last breath.

8. They were part of a prophecy that everyone was talking about.

Lord Voldemort’s version was that while one survived, the other could not live.

Lord Vader was thought to be the Chosen One to bring balance to the Force.

9. They were handsome young men who turned into ugly freaks.

As described in HP VI, Tom Riddle was a handsome young man whom a lao hiao auntie tried to flirt with.

Anakin Skywalker, personified by Hayden Christensen, no matter how gayish detractors might say, remains as one of the most handsome humans in the movie– Then again, I would also look good beside the haggard Emperor and my beloved Yoda.

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince is pretty much like Star Wars Episode III- Revenge of the Sith in the sense that the emphasis is placed on the villain.

Harry doesn’t go on to higher achivements apart from being named Quidditch Captain. He pretty much goes on a learning journey to see what Lord Voldemort was really like. It’s exactly what SW III was doing– closing the gap between the transformation of Anakin Skywalker to Darth Vader.

All other fixtures in the HP series like Quidditch which was the essence of HP IV: Gobblet of Fire, new magic tricks and stunts, are all overshadowed with the omnipresence of Voldemort.

Wouldn’t be it cool if Hayden Christensen plays Tom Riddle in the movie? Hmmmm..
